Platform Comparison 2026
Freshdesk vs. Gorgias vs. Zendesk: which is right for e-commerce?
Three general-purpose helpdesk platforms, all retrofitted with e-commerce features. Here’s how they actually compare for a webshop — and why an e-commerce-native AI assistant is a different category altogether.
Request demoShort answer: Gorgias is the most e-commerce-native of the three, with the deepest Shopify integration. Zendesk is the most powerful for complex, multi-channel enterprise support but comes with the steepest setup and price. Freshdesk sits in between — solid general helpdesk features at a lower price, but shallower store integrations than Gorgias. All three charge per-agent or per-ticket-resolution pricing that scales awkwardly as your store grows.
Where each platform actually comes from
This matters more than the feature comparison tables suggest. Zendesk was built for enterprise software support — its data model assumes complex ticket routing across large teams, not a webshop owner checking order status. Freshdesk followed a similar general-helpdesk path, aimed at SaaS and IT support teams. Gorgias is the outlier: it was built specifically for Shopify merchants from day one, which shows in how naturally order and customer data surface inside a ticket.
None of the three were built around an AI agent that takes action in your store. They were built as ticket-routing systems, and AI features were added on top later. That’s a meaningful difference from a platform designed around automated resolution from the start.

The pricing trap all three share
Gorgias charges per resolved ticket once you exceed your plan’s included volume. Zendesk and Freshdesk charge per agent seat. Both models create a strange incentive as you grow: more customers means more tickets or more agents, which means the tool gets more expensive exactly when you need it to scale efficiently. None of the three price around outcomes — they price around usage of a ticketing system.
That’s a structural mismatch if your actual goal isn’t “manage more tickets” but “resolve customer questions with fewer tickets needing a human at all.” A flat-rate model tied to automation coverage, not ticket count, aligns incentives differently — see how YDM’s pricing works.
What none of them do particularly well
- Real order actions. Most “AI” features in these platforms draft suggested replies or summarize tickets — they don’t independently look up an order in Shopify, check fulfillment status in your 3PL, and issue a return label without a human clicking send.
- Multi-system context in one pass. A WISMO question often needs data from your store platform, your shipping carrier and sometimes a returns tool simultaneously. General helpdesks route the ticket to a human who then checks each system manually.
- E-commerce-specific escalation logic. Refund thresholds, goodwill limits, and return-window rules are store-specific business logic that a generic ticketing system doesn’t understand out of the box — it has to be configured manually, ticket type by ticket type.
When each one is genuinely the right call
Choose Zendesk if you run a large, multi-channel support operation (phone, chat, email, social) with dozens of agents and need enterprise-grade routing and reporting more than deep store integration.
Choose Freshdesk if budget is the primary constraint and your support needs are closer to general helpdesk than e-commerce-specific automation.
Choose Gorgias if you want the most e-commerce-aware of the three ticketing platforms and are comfortable with per-resolution pricing as you scale.
Choose an e-commerce-native AI assistant like YDM if your priority is reducing the number of questions that need a human at all — order status, returns and product questions handled automatically with real actions in Shopify, WooCommerce or bol.com, not just suggested replies inside a ticket queue.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use YDM alongside Gorgias, Zendesk or Freshdesk?
Yes. Many stores run YDM to auto-resolve the repetitive, factual questions (order status, returns, product questions) while keeping their existing helpdesk for the complex cases that still need a human queue.
Which is cheapest for a small store?
On paper, Freshdesk often has the lowest entry price. But per-agent and per-ticket pricing means the real cost depends entirely on your volume — model it against your actual ticket count before comparing sticker prices.
Does Gorgias’s Shopify integration make AI automation unnecessary?
No — integration depth and automation are different things. Gorgias surfaces order data inside a ticket for a human to read; it doesn’t independently resolve the question and close the loop with the customer the way a dedicated AI assistant does.
